Cheap clobber (8)

Another visit to the "cut Price" shop.
It´s getting colder and I´ve been on the search for a decent pair of shoes for winter conditions. Nothing decent enough (size  or style wise)  had turned up in the various places that I go hunting but this time there was the near perfect pair.
Nothing too fancy,(keeps the cleaning down to a  polish) and decent "None slip" soles.

Along with the shoes, I got a couple of scarfs. Granted, they are slightly different widths and lengths but they are all made from wool and at 50 Cents a scarf, you won´t hear me complaining.
And when getting winter scarfs, why not a few silk neckscarfs? Also 50 Cent a Pop.
How much the for the lot?  Considering the shoes were a bit of a state when I found them, scuffed and they hadn´t seen polish for an Age, I managed to deal the whole lot down to 12 euros which means the shoes cost  a fiver :-D

All that Jazz

The 1959 novel Absolute Beginners describes modernists as young modern jazz fans who dress in sharp modern Italian clothes.
Not all Modern Jazz is "listenable" or "cool" enough to have that "Modernist Sound" but there are some cracking tunes, especially from the late 50´s and the 60´s.
Here´s ten to start with.
Alvin Cash and The Crawlers - Twine Time (1965)
B.B King -3 O'clock Stomp Aka Poontwangie (1962)
Dave "Baby" Cortez - Rinky Dink  (1962)
Dave Davani Four - The Jupe (1965)
George Stone -  Hole in the Wall  (1965)
Jr Walker & the All Stars -   Cleo's Mood (1966)
Mike Vickers - On the Brink (1965)
Terrell Prude - Frog-Eyes (1963)
The Young-Holt Trio - Wack Wack (1966)
Willie Mitchell  - 30-60-90 (1969)

Cheap clobber (7)

Another Little collection of additions, Shirt, scarf and coat, all for 8 euros the lot.
The herringbone pattern caught my eye.
For 6 euros, you can´t really complain eh?
Ok, it isn´t pure silk but it´s worth the 50 Cents.

Sawdust Caesers

"These long-haired, mentally unstable, petty little hoodlums, these sawdust Caesars who can only find courage like rats hunting in packs, came to Margate with the avowed intent on interfering with the life and properties of its inhabitants." Part of the speech made by Dr George Simpson, chairman of Margate magistrates as he passed sentence on 4 who had taken part in the disturbances in margate , 1964.

Part of it became a catchphrase and the titel to Tony Beesley´s Book, which covers the rise of the Modernist style from the late 50´s and it´s development into present times. Not an easy Thing to cover and record the "movement" which has gone through a lot of alterations since it´s beginings over 50 years ago,  but Tony has covered it extremely well, combining photos with the voices of modernists who have lived and breathed it´s history.

A definate "Must have" for anyone interested in Modernism

Blast from the past (3)

Just got hold of this bit of 60´s Technology, a 1961/62
Loewe Opta
Bella - Luxus 6730 W
The Sound, which is deep and rich kicks modern Radios into the Long grass.
Fully functional, it was in a bit of a mess when I got it and needed a lot of cleaning, the box had coffee Cup stains, the dials had to be removed for cleaning, the glass had a thick layer of grime over it. At some Point the material covering the Speaker will have to be taken off and cleaned.
It´s big and heavy, 44 x 27,5 x 21 cm and weighs 6kg´s.
When it was first produced this cost DM269.....quite a lot back then and calculated (using THIS online converter) into it´s equivalent worth these days would cost DM1088.99 or 556.77 Euros!!

Blast from the past (2)

Bit´s and pieces from my "scrapbook" from 78-/79 - 84-/85.

A brand new GP for 402 quid with VAT!!
As far as I remember the "Disco" was bloody awefull..virtually None of what was promised and asking the DJ for anything decent was a waste of time.
Mr Piller. The write up (don´t ask me which paper or mag it was in) that went with the pic is on another page. It says that Eddie is 18 at the time of the article. I won´t print what Eddie Said in the article as we all know, journos do tend to take things out of context.
A cut up Flyer.
Don´t remember a topless dancer..maybe they meant that one of the blokes got thier Shirts off....
Paul Weller "getting back to nature"  in his Style council days..

Sadly ecstatic. That their heroes are News!
Looking at these newspaper clppings you´d think mayhem ruled, but as I said above, journos do tend to the creative side of presenting what happened. For instance..note the Headline with Death threat in inverted commas.
Just one of the many pages in the "scrapbook".

Cheap Clobber (5)

Another visit to the Flea market and more bargains. What does 11 euros get you?
The Shirt, made by Luciano,  isn´t anything  Special, but it´s a nice fit and colour and the more, the merrier.
The Jacket. Also not an expensive and will Need a wee bit of tailoring but for the Price, ok.

The shoes are the best bit of the deal. I was looking to aquire some "new" shoes in black and Bingo...a pair made by Pierre Cardin Pops up. There´s a bit of scuffing and the leather Needs some replenishing and polishing but  basically they are Sound.

Style Tutorial

The pics below are from a really excellent FB Page called The Style Tutors.  They Feature some pretty amazing clobber, if I had the Money, their suggestions would keep my bank account very low.

There seems to be a constant discussion as to wether Modernists  should keep to the 60´s original style or look Forward and expand the look.
With a lot of the featured stuff on the Style Tutors page there´s enough (if you´ve the Money) to find something to add to the "original" look with Little subtleties...different types of desertboots, colour combinations etc. They also have regular links to other sites that give tips on all Areas of clothes...like how to care for, wear and and..

There´s really no Need to have to Resort to defining your Modernism with an overpriced re-pro italian style suit (that invariably does not fit) or by wearing a  parka covered in badges and patches.

Below are a couple of thier pics. Chosen because,
1. I like the combinations and ...
2. I´ve got most of the clobber to be able to make up the Combos.....I´ll have to find the waistcoats somehow :-D

Cheap Clobber (4)

Continuing the "it don´t have to cost a fortune" series with a couple more finds. For the outlay of 15 euros, and along with a rather nice silk tie and a lilac Cotton button down Shirt, These two ...
A waterproofed double breasted Trenchcoat. The colour is a bluish-green  and appears a bit darker in real life.
Sleeveless Lacoste Pullover. This one will get "recycled" as I´m not too keen on the colour red.

Cheap Clobber (3)

Some more aquisitions..
A "harrington" style jacket and another pair of brogues. Both bought for 6 euros a Piece.  :-D
The jacket is a good find...as can be seen from the Label. The spanish subsiduary  of Burberrys  was closed down in 2010 but the clothes are still, if not with the Made in England Label, Burberrys.
Another pair of brogues. These are Italian made but the makers Name has been worn away. Leather uppers with man made soles, I was going to have a bash at "up-grading" them with a Patina effect but until I´ve tried it out on another less "nice looking" pair of shoes, I´ll use them for day-to-day.

Sweet Soul Music

Managed to get hold of 4 pretty good Soul CD´s..not the usual collection of tracks that are normally be found on such collections  and covering the years where my main Musical interest lays, the late 50´s to the mid 60´s. Not all the tracks are  necessarily what I´d  Label as purely Soul, there´s a mix of bee-bop and blues, but maybe the titel "Sweet Soul Music" is intended to be more inklusive..that any my idea of what is directly a Soul track differs from what others would call Soul..and visa - versa.
Shame I couldn´t get hold of the  Cd covering 1963

Cheap Clobber (2)

Another small visit to the secondhand shop...
Another jacket, this time a 3 button  needle cord (5 Euros)....

...and another pair of Bally shoes. Not as nice as the last pair but for the Price paid (5 euros) well worth adding to the collection.
